What counts as unique camping?
Unique camping means sleeping somewhere memorable instead of in a standard tent site or hotel room: a converted school bus in the woods, a treehouse, a geodesic dome, a vintage train car. Many unique stays fall under glamping (glamorous camping), with real beds and power, but the real point is the place itself. You come home talking about where you slept, not just where you went.

Unique camping in Florida
Florida's Nature Coast, north of Tampa, is one of the best places in the state for something different. The Weeki Wachee River is spring-fed, clear and around 72 degrees all year, perfect for kayaking and paddleboarding, and manatees come into the springs in the cooler months. Nearby, the Chassahowitzka river and wildlife refuge offer quiet paddling through spring runs and marsh.
That's where we put Camp Calypso, our converted school bus campsite near Weeki Wachee in Spring Hill. It sleeps up to nine with solar power, portable AC, a fridge and rooftop tents. Everything stays on the bus, so the woods stay the way we found them. Add kayaks, snorkel kits and hammocks from our gear marketplace, or catch a pop-up projector movie night on the side of the bus.

Tips for booking a unique stay
- Book early for weekends and holidays. One-of-a-kind stays have exactly one unit, so they sell out fast.
- Read the bathroom and power details. Some stays have full bathrooms, others use composting toilets or a shared bathhouse. Know what you're booking.
- Check the weather plan. Ask about AC, heat and what happens in a storm, especially for tents, domes and treehouses.
- Look at access. Treehouses have stairs or ladders; remote sites may need a high-clearance vehicle.
- Pack light and leave no trace. Take out what you bring in.
